What is Somatic Emotional Awareness (S.E.A.)?

Emotional awareness is our ability to know and understand what emotional process we are experiencing. Adding a somatic piece to this allows us to include understanding and experiencing this emotion in the body, not just at a cognitive level. "Feelings" are our emotions because they carry a sensation in the body. Becoming aware of these sensations and feelings in the body is an essential tool to support us in navigating our interactions, exposing our core values, and interpreting what is safe and unsafe.

In this 6-module self-paced workshop, we will navigate the spectrum of human emotion in the body and learn the unique languages of our bodies. Each body has a unique sensory experience based on our own history and experiences, and during our time together, you will learn the language unique to your body. For example, what triggers the experience of anger in one person, may trigger a completely different emotion in another, and this is all based on previous experience and its resonance in our unique nervous system.

Why is it important to learn Somatic Emotional Awareness?

When we can recognize and learn the feelings and sensations in our body during our daily experiences, we can begin to understand what is being triggered in our body. Understanding what is being triggered in our body allows us to pull the thread of why we are experiencing it and begin to see which wound or painful experiencing the body feels is being recreated. You see, the body and the human nervous system are magnificent and complicated. Our nervous system's job is to keep us safe. When we have previously experienced situations that the nervous system deemed unsafe, it will now behave in such a way that tries to avoid recreating that situation or gives you the emotional and somatic warning bells that something isn't right. The more in-tune we are with the somatic feelings in our body, the more aware we become in interactions and day-to-day life. Self-awareness is one of the most incredible tools we naturally possess to properly regulate and reprogram the nervous system. Being aware of our genuine emotions is essential.

What happens when we ignore our emotions?

When we suppress our emotions and ignore the sensations they offer in our bodies; they only begin to talk louder and louder, often manifesting in pain, illness, and other physical conditions. Learning the unique language our bodies speak is incredibly valuable in healing the nervous system and the body.

How and When?

In each module we will explore a different emotion and its various shades. This class is a self guided course with hours of pre-recorded content, a course dashboard on Teachable and pre-recorded movement classes all facilitating education and tools to move through feeling the emotion of the week/module. On top of each week's lectures and educational content, there are exercises that incorporate meditation, mind-body experiences and movement to facilitate learning. Each module has a specific “movement class video” posted on our teachable platform, where it will touch on the unique emotion of the module with further support.
